Cartaya
Cartaya's origins are rooted in the depths of history. Its name comes from the Phoenician for 'City' and attests to the antiquity of Cartaya as a social entity. This fact is borne out by numerous archaeological remains found nearby. However, due to the fact Huelva, if not the whole of southern Spain, was historically a region that proved to be fatally attractive to every passing pirate and itinerant civilisation (such as the Berbers and the Normans), the zone was constantly isolated and it was not until the 15th Century that Cartaya could boast a stable population.
During this time the castle of Zuñiga was built. Today it is located in the old part of the city (the casco antiguo) and around this the modern city of Cartaya has grown, reflecting the aspirations of the modern population whilst at the same time preserving the proud heritage that has been passed down from times long gone.
History, a strong maritime tradition and, above all, agriculture characterise this part of the world. Cartaya is not only famous for its figs but also for its strawberries and its citrus fruit. Exportation of its agricultural produce and the growing influence of tourism have provided the dual motors of economic growth.
